Analysis of In-Hospital Deaths in a Women's and Children's Hospital from 2013 to 2022
Objectives This study aims to analyze the death cases of a tertiary women's and children's hospital to provide a basis for the prevention and treatment of key diseases for the hospital and the local health department.Methods The medical record front page information of patients discharged from a hospital from January 1,2013 to December 31,2022 was collected.The causes of death were classified using the International Classification of Diseases ICD-10.Excel and SPSS were used to analyze the gender,age,disease types,and other characteristics of the deceased patients.Results 319 patients died in the hospital,with a case fatality rate of 0.08%.The mortality rate of patients decreased linearly with the increase of years,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001).The proportion of children under 5 years who died was 90.28%,while children aged 0~28 days accounted for 68.34%.The top three causes of death were diseases originating in the perinatal period(57.37%),congenital diseases(9.09%),and respiratory diseases(7.84%).Neonatal respiratory distress(19.13%),severe birth asphyxia(14.75%),and prematurity(10.93%)were the specific causes of death originating from perinatal diseases.Congenital diaphragmatic hernia and severe pneumonia were the leading causes of death from congenital diseases and respiratory diseases respectively.The highest case fatality rate was accidental injury diseases,which was 0.58%.Conclusions Children under 5 years old are the main group of fatal patients.Neonatal respiratory distress,birth asphyxia,premature birth,congenital defects,severe pneumonia,etc.are the key diseases leading to child death.Hospitals and local health departments need to strengthen perinatal care and related disciplines,as well as publicity and education on knowledge about preventing accidental injuries to children.
