ICD-9-CM-3 Coding Analysis of Peripheral Nervous System Surgery
Peripheral nervous system surgery is a surgical method for treating various neurological disorders and is often performed in neurosurgery, hand surgery, orthopedics, and pain medicine. In ICD-9-CM-3,peripheral nervous system surgery is categorized into cranial and peripheral nerve surgery,as well as sympathetic nerve surgery based on the site axis.Subcategories include severance, release, block, disruption, and resection of peripheral nerves based on operative style,as well as repair, electrical stimulation, etc.Further subcategories are organized based on the site axis.By analyzing the connotation of peripheral nervous system surgery and procedure coding in ICD-9-CM-3,this study summarized the nuances of coding for each part of the nerves under different procedures, such as vagotomy classified to Chapter 11 Digestive System Surgery, and implantation, replacement, and removal of peripheral nerve impulse generators classified to Chapter 17 Body Being System Surgery, and so on.Meanwhile, coders also need to deepen their understanding of the connotations of terms such as nerve root, ganglion, lacrimal branch nerve, carpal and tarsal tunnel release, and renal sympathetic nerve. This will continue to improve the accuracy and science of coding and contribute to the hospital's high quality development.
