ICD-9-CM-3 Coding Analysis of Bone Repair Materials
With the rapid development of medicine, the increasing variety of bone defects raises clinical demands for bone defect repair materials, leading to a growing range of available bone repair materials. The Medical Device Classification Catalogue issued by the State Food and Drug Administration provides a detailed classification of various bone repair materials available on the market. However, there are differences in the codes corresponding to different material types, making it difficult for coders to identify the appropriate codes for various types of bone repair materials.By searching the index of ICD-9-CM-3 reference books, this study found the following codes related to bone repair material implantation:bone grafting(78.0),insertion of recombinant bone morphogenetic protein(84.52),insertion of bone void filler(84.55),and insertion of(cement)spacer(84.56).By combining the national instrument registration number or name and origin information provided on the consumable label of bone repair materials used in bone transplantation surgery, this study further verified the specific composition of the materials in the official website database of the State Food and Drug Administration.Subsequently, this study analyzed the operative codes corresponding to various bone repair materials.Coders can utilize the official database to register device information and refer to surgical operation coding reference books to compare and select the correct code. This helps to further enhance coding accuracy and reinforce the utilization and comprehension of reference book indices.
