Analysis of Changes in Disease Spectrum Among Hospitalized Children Aged 5 and Under in a Hospital from 2017 to 2022
Objectives This study aims to analyze the composition of the disease spectrum of children admitted to a hospital in Hainan Province from 2017-2022,so as to provide a scientific basis for further improving the medical treatment and preventive health care of children aged 5 years and under. Methods The data came from the medical records of hospitalized children aged ≤5 years old from January 1,2017 to December 31,2022,in a hospital's medical record statistical management system, with a total of 52,738 cases.Disease classification statistics and analysis on these medical records were carried out. Results The top five disease systems in the disease spectrum were respiratory diseases(11,037 cases),certain diseases originating in the perinatal period(10,512 cases),digestive system diseases(6568 cases),and certain infectious diseases and parasitic diseases(5345 cases),and congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities(4951 cases). The top five single diseases were sepsis(4370 cases),pulmonary infection(3976 cases),bilateral inguinal hernia(2198 cases),neonatal pneumonia(1676 cases)and Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia(1280 cases).Respiratory diseases predominated in boys, while certain diseases originating in the perinatal period predominated in girls.Except for the neonatal group, where certain diseases originating in the perinatal period ranked first, respiratory diseases ranked first in all other age groups.During summer, autumn, and winter, certain diseases of perinatal origin dominated. In spring, respiratory diseases predominated. Conclusions The main disease systems of children hospitalized in a hospital in Hainan Province are respiratory diseases and certain diseases originated in the perinatal period. The seasonal distribution of the number of hospitalized children is not obvious, but the types of disease systems are different in different seasons. The aforementioned characteristics imply that a hospital should allocate medical resources evenly throughout the year to meet the needs of hospitalized children.Additionally, strengthening collaboration between respiratory and pediatric departments is necessary to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of children's respiratory diseases. Moreover, improving perinatal management is essential to reduce the incidence of perinatal diseases.
