Response to the Surge in COVID-19 Treatment Pressure in a Tertiary General Hospital in Beijing
Objectives This study aims to analyze the COVID-19 treatment pressure faced by a tertiary general hospital in Beijing after the implementation of the"New Ten Measures,"assess the response strategies adopted, and understand their effectiveness. Methods The daily number of hospital admissions and the daily number of deaths in a tertiary general hospital in Beijing from November 1,2022 to January 31,2023 were collected.Based on the changing trend of the hospital's treatment pressure and the time when comprehensive measures were taken, the research time was divided into three different time periods:the early stage of the epidemic peak(November 1,2022-December 5,2022,35 days),and the peak period of the epidemic(35 days)December 6,2022-December 31,2022,26 days)and the late peak period of the epidemic(January 1,2023-January 31,2023,31 days). The treatment pressure faced by hospitals in different periods and the response strategies and measures adopted were analyzed. Results During the peak period of the epidemic, the daily average(median)number of people in hospital increased sharply from 1,002 at the beginning of the peak to 1,985,an increase of 1.98 times. The hospital adopted multi-stage comprehensive treatment and response measures, including precise and rapid triage, treatment of severe patients and supply of medicines and supplies. At the end of the peak period of the epidemic, the average daily number of people in hospital dropped to 1,695,which was 0.85 times that of the peak period. In the early and peak stages of the epidemic, there was a positive correlation between the daily number of people in hospital and the daily number of deaths(r=0.47,r=0.58;P=0.004,P=0.002),while in the later stages of the epidemic peak, there was no correlation between the daily number of people in hospital and the daily number of deaths(r=0.23;P=0.22).Conclusions During the peak of the epidemic, the hospital implemented comprehensive, scientific, and timely response measures, effectively managing the surge in patient volume. These measures provide valuable experience and serve as a reference for future responses to other major public health events.
