Analysis of the Disease Spectrum of Patients Treated in the Emergency Medicine Department of a Hospital in the Past Three Years
Objectives This study aims to analyze the disease spectrum of patients treated in the emergency medicine department of a hospital in the past three years and explore the impact of large public health events on patients visiting emergency departments,so as to provide a basis for rational allocation of emergency resources. Methods Information on emergency patients in a hospital from January 1,2019 to December 31,2021 was collected. The distribution characteristics of patients'age, medical specialty,pre-examination and triage, symptoms and disease types during the three-year period were retrospectively analyzed. Results Retrospective analysis showed that a total of 521,229 patients were collected,1,362 cases that did not meet the inclusion criteria were eliminated, and 519,867 cases met the criteria. The male-to-female ratio was 1:1.16.The average age was 50.76±20.176 years old,and the age groups were relatively concentrated between 60 and 79 years old and 40 and 59 years old.Compared with Grade 1,Grade 2,Grade 3 and Grade 4 patients in 2019,all levels decreased in 2020,which were-50.99%,-60.18%,-45.47%and-10.71%,respectively.In 2021,it was-46.54%,-44.44%,-47.35%and+21.13%,respectively.Distribution by specialty, occupational diseases, emergency ophthalmology, emergency otolaryngology, and emergency internal medicine dropped the most in 2020,by-57.23%,-45.48%,-41.06%,and-30.50%respectively.However,emergency surgery and emergency gynecology increased by 3.2%and 75.35%in 2021.According to the distribution of symptoms, the number of patients with abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, chest pain, chest tightness, and palpitations was increasing year by year. The number of patients with fever, cough and vomiting was decreasing year by year. The number of patients with wheezing first decreased and then increased. In terms of disease distribution, respiratory infectious diseases were declining year by year, while cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases were increasing year by year. The number of Grade 1 patients dropped significantly from the first quarter to the fourth quarter of 2019 and stabilized in the four quarters of 2020 and 2021.Among Grade 1 patients,51.3%-73.17%were over 60 years old. Conclusions Under the normal state of public health emergencies, the number of emergency room patients dropped sharply and then gradually increased, almost returning to normal.Elderly patients recovered quickly.Among them, elderly patients with severe disease accounted for a higher proportion, especially those with severe cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
