Application of Case-based Teaching Method in Teaching Postgraduates of TCM Geriatrics
Objectives This study aims to explore the teaching effect of case-based teaching method in postgraduate students of geriatrics in Chinese medicine to provide a reference basis for improving the quality of teaching. Methods 100 professional postgraduate students studying in the geriatrics department of a tertiary hospital from September 16,2022 to October 15,2022 were randomly divided into a control group and an experimental group, with the control group(n=50)adopting the traditional teaching method and the experimental group(n=50)adopting the case-based teaching method. The teaching effect of the 2 teaching modes was evaluated by using a combination of examination scores and questionnaires to compare the differences in the theory scores of Chinese geriatrics, the practical operation scores, the students'self-evaluation,the evaluation of the teaching method, and the evaluation of the teachers in the 2 groups. Results The experimental group scored 85.78±6.08 and 89.12±6.40 in theory and practical skills operation, respectively, higher than the control group, and the difference was statistically significant. In terms of students'self-evaluation,the results of the questionnaires in the experimental group were significantly better than those in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant. In terms of evaluation of the teaching method, the experimental group found that the teaching aroused curiosity, the content of the teaching text was in line with interests, the teaching could deepen the understanding and mastery of geriatric diseases, some unexpected knowledge could be learned from it,the efforts were affirmed, and the teaching was relevant. The questionnaire scores on how to apply theoretical knowledge were significantly higher than those in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant. In terms of the text content being more difficult than expected, the discussion being too difficult, and the teaching model increasing the learning burden, the questionnaire scores of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group, and the differences were all statistically significant. In terms of teacher evaluation, teachers in the experimental group can properly guide students to collect information before the start of teaching.During the teaching process, teachers can provide targeted guidance, have an in-depth understanding of students'ideas, and supplement with the latest explanations. The questionnaire scores on progress and overall teacher role play were significantly higher than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant. The experimental group's questionnaire scores were significantly lower than those of the control group in terms of the teacher's failure to express too much of his own opinion during the teaching process, and the difference was statistically significant. Conclusions The application of case-based teaching method in the clinical teaching of postgraduate students of Chinese medicine and geriatrics can improve students'theoretical and operative scores, increase students'satisfaction with themselves and their teachers, arouse students'curiosity and cultivate innovative thinking, and deepen students'understanding and mastery of Chinese medicine and geriatrics, which is a mode of teaching that deserves to be further researched and promoted.
