The Impact of Molecular Diagnostic Techniques on Tuberculosis Coding Using ICD-10
As a rapid tuberculosis diagnosis technology, molecular diagnostic technology helps in the early diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and reduces the risk of tuberculosis transmission. However,in ICD-10 coding, the classification axis of respiratory tuberculosis is the laboratory confirmation of tuberculosis bacilli. This category only mentions bacteriological and histological confirmation, which can easily lead to incorrect coding of tuberculosis cases confirmed by molecular diagnostic techniques.Molecular diagnostic techniques do not belong to sputum microscopy, nor sputum culture or histological techniques. However,as a diagnostic criterion for tuberculosis,it should be classified as"A15.3 Tuberculosis of lung, confirmed by unspecified means"when coding.Meanwhile,rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis,as a disease treated with second-line anti-tuberculosis drugs, needs to be further clarified according to the current"Disease Classification Code National Clinical Version"commonly used in China. When facing the coding challenges brought about by new diagnostic and treatment technologies, coders should maintain a rigorous work attitude and a concept of continuous learning and improve the accuracy of disease coding through multidisciplinary collaboration.
