Pareto Chart Analysis of Injury Types and External Causes in 319 Patients with Injury Deaths
Objectives To collect information on patients who died of injuries and poisoning(hereinafter referred to as injuries)in a hospital, and analyze the types of injuries and external causes of injuries in patients who died of injuries in a hospital,so as to provide a reliable basis for the rational allocation of medical resources and the enhancement of the prevention and treatment of injuries in the region. Methods Information and underlying causes of death of 319 patients who died from injuries in a hospital from January 1st,2015,to December 31st,2022,were collected, and the causes of death were categorized and summarized according to ICD-10,and the cases with underlying cause of death ICD-10 codes of V01 to Y98 were selected, and the type of injury and external causes of injury in patients who died from injuries were analyzed by using the Pareto chart method. Results From 2015 to 2022,the inpatient mortality rate of a hospital was higher(2.52%)than that of emergency care(0.14%),but the percentage of injury deaths in emergency care(8.25%)was higher than that of inpatient care(2.82%).A total of 319 deaths due to injuries were collected in the 8-year period, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.75:1,with males higher than females, and the difference between males and females in the different age groups was statistically significant(χ2=308.196,P<0.001),the highest age group constituting death was 85-94 years old(25.39%),and 65 years old or older accounted for a total of 67.71%;analyzed using a Pareto chart, the main influencing factors of injury type were head injury, lower extremity injury, sequelae of injury, abdominal, lower back, lumbar spine, and pelvic injuries, with a cumulative ratio of 77.12%,and the main influence of external causes of injury was falls and traffic accidents. The main factors influencing the external causes of injuries were falls and traffic accidents, with a cumulative percentage of 75.55%.Conclusions Falls and traffic accidents among the elderly had an important impact on the outcome of head and lower limb injuries and other types of injuries. It was suggested that government departments should further improve the protection of elderly services, strengthen traffic safety management and reduce the incidence of injuries, and hospitals should strengthen the construction of neurosurgery, orthopedics and other trauma disciplines, and rationally deploy medical resources to reduce the mortality rate of injuries.
