Sheep is an important livestock, and the litter size is a key factor affecting the economic benefits of the sheep industry. The FecB gene is one of the major genes known to regulate the litter size of sheep. The detection and application of its effect sites play an important role in improving the annual slaughter rate and mutton yield of sheep, accelerating the cultivation of new varieties of polytocous mutton sheep, and improving the breeding efficiency of large-scale sheep farms. Therefore, the discovery and mapping of the gene FecB,the population distribution and origin, the mechanism of regulating sheep prolificacy, the establishment and de-velopment of detection methods, and their applications in the breeding of polytocous mutton sheep were reviewed in this paper,it can provide a reference for sheep breeding and related practitioners.
