Shiqi pigeon is one of the excellent local meat pigeon breeds in China,with a breeding history of more than a hundred years.Starting from the formation source and promoting factors of the Shiqi pigeon,this article introduced the breed characteristics of Shiqi pigeon(appearance characteristics,growth performance,reproductive performance and nutritional value),put forward the necessity of protecting the genetic resources of Shiqi pigeon,summarized the current situation of germplasm resource protection and utilization,and pointed out that there were still some problems in the conservation and development and utilization of Shiqi pigeon at present,such as serious breed degradation,low utilization of breed resources,low publicity efforts and few enterprises involved in breeding.Suggestions such as accelerating the process of improved breeding,improving the conservation base,strengthening brand building and encouraging the development of grassroots breeding were proposed,in order to provide constructive references for the high-quality development of the Shiqi pigeon industry and contribute to the sustainable protection and utilization of the germplasm resources of Shiqi pigeon.
