Evaluations and reflections on current status of unconventional water source development and utilization in the Yellow River basin
The mismatch between water supply and demand in the Yellow River basin is becoming increasingly acute.Comprehensive development and utilization of unconventional water sources present an effective approach to mitigate water scarcity.Based on the 2014-2023 water resources bulletin data from provinces and autonomous regions in the Yellow River basin, this study statistically analyzes the current status and trends of unconventional water source development and utilization in the region. The findings reveal a consistent annual increase in the utilization of unconventional water sources, reaching 2.314 billion m3 in 2023,accounting for 6.10%of the total water supply. However, several challenges persist, including inadequate scientific planning, inconsistent statistical standards, insufficient incentive and constraint mechanisms, water quality failing to meet usage requirements, and limited management capacity. To address these issues,it is recommended to establish a coordinated mechanism among relevant departments, integrate unconventional water sources into unified water resource allocation, develop incentive and constraint mechanisms, refine technical standards, and strengthen river basin governance and management. These measures aim to advance the coordinated development and utilization of unconventional water sources, providing robust support to mitigate the supply-demand imbalance and enhance water security in the Yellow River basin.
