The purposes of this study are to clarify the formation logic and define the connotation of collective trusteeship under the current dilemma of the fragmentation of idle rural residential land and the"idle housing but not idle rural residential land",to investigate the impact of collective trusteeship on rural residential land use efficiency,to provide the reference for redeveloping idle rural land,promoting rural-urban integration and achieving rural revitalization.The research methods include the Super-efficient DEA model and the Tobit regression model.The results indicate that:1)collective trusteeship can leverage the comparative advantages of collectives and farmers,and effectively alleviate the dilemma of redeveloping rural residential land.2)Collective trusteeship enhances rural residential land use efficiency,with farmers who have adopted collective trusteeship demonstrating approximately 10.4%higher efficiency in rural residential land use compared to those who have not adopted trusteeship.3)The influence of collective trusteeship on rural residential land use efficiency is heterogeneous.It is suggested to consider the whole-process trusteeship and partial trusteeship for farmers who have all houses and some houses under trusteeship,respectively.In conclusion,collective trusteeship is a beneficial exploration for improving rural residential land use efficiency.It is recommended that the government actively promote the"tripartite entitlement"system and develop the context-specific plans for different types of villages.Furthermore,collective economic organizations should continually enhance their capabilities,innovate trustee models,improve service capacities,provide differentiated plans for farmers,and clarify rights and responsibilities throughout service delivery.
