Re-cultivation Behavior and Influencing Factors of Fallow Farmers under the Extended Theory of Planned Behavior:Evidence from Heavy Metal-contaminated Fallow Areas
The purpose of this study is to develop a model of fallow farmers're-cultivation behavior based on the theory of planned behavior and the asset specificity theory, using heavy metal-contaminated fallow areas as a case study to examine the characteristics and influencing factors of their re-cultivation intentions and behaviors. The research method is structural equation model. The research results show that the Theory of Planned Behavior(TPB)effectively explains the intentions and behaviors associated with re-cultivation among fallow farmers.Notably, the intention of re-cultivation is significantly and positively affected by the behavioral attitudes and subjective norms, whereas the actual re-cultivation behavior is significantly and positively influenced by the intention and perceived behavioral control. Moreover, behavioral attitudes and subjective norms influence re-cultivation behavior indirectly through the mediating role of the intention to re-cultivation.The perceived value shows a significant positive effect on the intention of re-cultivation,and agricultural asset specificity positively affects both the intention and behavior.Conversely, factors such as labor quantity and total rural household income negatively influence re-cultivation behavior. The multi-group analysis suggests that while the extended TPB framework continues to explain the mechanisms of re-cultivation intentions and behaviors across farmers with different gender, income levels and agricultural classifications, the magnitude of these effects varies.Specifically, the impact of asset specificity on both intentions and behavior gradually weakens from low-income to high-income farmers, and from agricultural to non-agricultural farmers. In conclusion,to ensure food security and policy sustainability, the government should focus on the performance of re-cultivation and enhance the re-cultivation intention by increasing the intensity of propaganda, improving compensation systems, and enhancing asset specificity of farmers.
