Theory of Mind and Its Application in the Study of Pragmatic Impairments
Previous attempts in the international scope found that Theory of Mind(ToM)is applicable to the study of various pragmatic impairments and has already been applied to empirical studies. This paper first introduces the concept of ToM and explains how it is related to pragmatic impairments. It then presents the research topics and methods in this field.More specifically, this paper proposes that applying ToM to the studies of pragmatic impairments requires a systematic and comprehensive analytical framework. To fill this gap,Relevance Theory is suggested to serve as the bridge and speech act can be adopted as the basic unit of analysis, which facilitates the framework of"disorder description—cognitive inference—mechanism explanation".Using ToM endows the study of pragmatic impairments with a cognitive dimension, which has strong explanatory power and theoretical significance.
