A Study on the Intertextual Approach to Translate Maritime Silk Road Classics:A Case Study of Rockhill's Translations
The maritime silk road classics,recording the location,social system,local customs,climate,products and history of exchanges between different countries,are regarded as encyclopedias of ancient maritime silk road.These classics have a long time span,and the themes are mostly continuous,unified and inherited,showing a strong intertextual relationship.From the perspective of intertextuality,this article focuses on the translations of the maritime silk road classics by W.W.Rockhill,the well-known American"scholar-diplomat",and explores the intertextual way of English translations.By combing and reading the maritime silk road classics,Rockhill interpreted the source text and constructed the target text with the help of intertexts,which formed an intertextual landscape in which the target text has both breadth and depth of knowledge.The findings can provide some reference and reflection for the Chinese-English translation of other maritime silk road classics as well as the external communication of maritime silkroad culture.
