A Multimodal Harmonious Framing Analysis of Constructive News:Exemplified by People's Daily's Coverage of Catastrophic Events
Constructive news refers to reporting that focuses on solving social problems and exploring the positive significance of events.Based on harmonious discourse analysis and theories of systemic functional linguistics and cognitive linguistics, this paper constructs a multimodal harmonious framing framework for constructive news.It explores the discourse features of constructive news, with Weibo news reports on earthquakes from People's Daily as the corpus. The study finds that among surface frames, frames of news flash and solutions take the largest proportion, and frames of peace and restorative narrative take the second, followed by the prospective frame. These surface frames activate deep frames including the ecological philosophical view of"diverse harmony and interactive symbiosis"and the ecological values of sustainable development. They are consistent with the"people-oriented"assumption and the principles of conscience, proximity, and regulation. The news presents remarkable complexity in register and multimodal resources. In this way, multiple purposes are achieved, including reporting news events, raising public consciousness, and inspiring people, fully demonstrating the positive role of discourse in constructing a harmonious society.
