An Analysis of Animal Welfare Ecological News Coverage from the Perspective of Recontextualization
Newspaper is an important carrier of mass communication,which plays the role of orientating values and guiding public opinions.The content in the mainstream of news media also mirrors and steers public consciousness,values and behaviors.Thus,from the vantage point of recontextualization rooted in critical discourse analysis,the study examines the recontextualization process of animal welfare discourse,in particular,the embedded discursive features and reporting tendencies,based on China Daily's news coverage from June 30th,2019 to June 30th,2022 by employing the corpus tool KH Coder.The findings suggest that China Daily has positively reported the process of promoting animal welfare in China and also affirmed roles played by diverse subjects(such as the government,enterprises,individuals and social organizations)in this process.Meanwhile,the protection of endangered wildlife and pet animals,food security and public health as well as biodiversity conservation are hot topics that China Daily has paid close attention to.Notably,China Daily also points out existing problems in spurring animal welfare in China,for example,the conflict between animal welfare and human rights,violent animal abuse,etc.On this basis,the available path is proposed for the future promotion of animal welfare and protection in China so as to provide a useful supplement for further domestic research on animal welfare and to push forward the domestic construction of ecological civilization.
