Examining the Effectiveness of Automated Writing Evaluation Feedback in EFL/ESL Writing:A Meta-Analysis
Automated writing evaluation(AWE)has been used more and more widely in teaching EFL/ESL writing.However,there has been controversy about whether AWE feedback can effectively facilitate EFL/ESL writing.This study conducts a meta-analysis of 25 empirical studies in China and abroad,examining the effectiveness and influencing factors of AWE feedback in EFL/ESL writing.The results show that AWE feedback has a moderate overall effect.Research context,learners'education level and major,AWE platform,scoring subject and treatment session all have significant effects on AWE feedback.The findings have some implications for EFL/ESL writing teaching,AWE feedback research and AWE platform development.
