Discourse Construction of Fukushima Nuclear Wastewater Discharge in Japanese Mainstream Media
On August 24,2023,the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan initiated the release of nuclear wastewater into the ocean,raising significant concerns regarding international public health and safety,as well as the well-being of neighboring countries.However,Japanese mainstream media endeavored to assert the legitimacy and safety of the discharged nuclear radioactive water in the news reports.This study employs corpus-based discourse historical approach and unsupervised machine learning techniques to analyze the discourse strategies employed by the Japanese mainstream media regarding the Fukushima nuclear wastewater discharge.The research findings revealed that the media employed positive evaluations,avoided legal issues,relied on authoritative discourse,and disregarded the voices of the general public and fishermen,thereby downplaying the severity of the nuclear wastewater discharge.
