On the Variation Characteristics of the Internal Details of the Types of Transmission in the Chapter"Conquer the Northern Demon"of Gesar
The chapter"Conquer the Northern Demon"is the first episode of the story"Conquer Four Direction's Demons"in the Gesar epic cycles,which lays the foundation for the epic's theme of"conquering the demon"and its typical plot structure.This chapter,which is characterized by a worldwide cycle of stories of"hero subduing demon",presents from its origins the deeds of the original ancestral heroes as"messengers of civilization".In terms of the structural pattern of its storyline,there is again a close relationship between it and the typical story-patterns of European and Asian heroic epics(the hero's return and the hero's expedition).As a result,it also demonstrates the kind of broad-mindedness of concern for the community of human destiny that characterizes world epics.In this article,based on 15 texts,the author summarizes three relatively independent types of transmission:traditional,developmental,and alienated;and an attempt has been made to analyze the differences and evolutionary features in the setting of special details between texts within each type of transmis-sion.It then explores the boundaries of the story of"conquering the northern demon"and the general features of the"new story of conquering the demon"that was derived and created on the basis of this chapter.It is be-lieved that this chapter provides a creative model and source of inspiration for the creation of the"new story of conquering the demon"of the Gesar epic cycles.
