Li Anzhai's Tibetan Studies and His Theory of Han-Tibetan Relations
Li Anzhai was one of the earliest pioneers in China who used anthropological theories and methods in the modern scientific sense to conduct Tibetan studies. He had a profound foundation in traditional Confu-cianism,as well as solid theoretical literacy in Western anthropology and sociology, and had the advantage of examining societies in Tibetan-related areas from multiple perspectives, disciplines, and dimensions. His Tibetan studies focused on both fieldwork and historical documents, both basic research and practical is-sues.His ultimate goal was to communicate between Han and Tibetan ethnic groups and to make rational re-flections on national construction and ethnic relations.Li Anzhai's Tibetan studies originated from his trip to the northwest of China, focusing on the investigation of Labrang Monastery, and extended to the discussion of Han-Tibetan ethnic relations and the integrality of the Chinese nation. He clearly pointed out that Tibetan peo-ple are an important part of the Chinese nation, and Tibetan-related areas and the mainland should help each other and progress together. He went beyond the"functional school"research paradigm of academic circles and provided strong evidence on the issue of the integrity of the Chinese nation from the perspective of Han-Tibetan contacts, exchanges and integration.Putting the history of Han-Tibetan relations into the narrative of the history of contacts, exchanges and integration of the Chinese nation and focusing on reconciling the relationship be-tween"diversity"and"unity"is Li Anzhai's useful contribution to the theory of the Chinese nation. On the ba-sis of acknowledging the internal differences of the Chinese nation,he emphasized the"regional division of work"under the principle of"true unity",aiming to consolidate national identity. This is Li Anzhai's academic effort to build a cultural model that embraces diversity within the whole and enriches the whole with diversity.
