In the middle of the 7th century AD,after the YarlungZampo tribe unified the Tibetan Plateau, the Tubo regime was established, and it maintained close political, economic, linguistic, and cultural connections with surrounding regions and ethnic groups.During the ethnic-cultural exchanges in the northwestern border areas of medieval China, the Central Plains culture introduced new elements to the cultures of other ethnic groups, whether directly or indirectly. For example, the word"rgyalmo"in Dunhuang Tibetan documents and Tibetan historical records handed down is a Tibetan transliteration of the Chinese word"gongzhu"(meaning princess). However, its word-formation,origin,and the ethnic background of the referent are different from traditional Tibetan translations or terms directly introduced from Chinese into Tibetan, presenting certain complexity.Research has found that this word first entered the Tuyuhun language from Chinese via the Altaic language family. In the first half of the 6th century,it was then transmitted to the core area of Tubo through the political marriage between Tuyuhun and Tubo, and remained in Tibetan historical records handed down in its unique spelling until the 17th century.
