The present situation and prospect of basic research in orthopedics
Musculoskeletal disorders are increasingly becoming important causes of chronic disabil-ity in the population.Although the patients'quality of life could be improved by pain alleviation and limb function reconstruction through drug administration, rehabilitation, and surgical treatment, there is no early prevention and treatment method to delay or block disease progression. In recent years, the continuous deepening of basic experimental research has laid a solid theoretical foundation for exploring the pathogene-sis and potential intervention methods of musculoskeletal disorders, which is expected to provide new meth-ods for early diagnosis and precise treatment. However, due to the traditional and unified nature of current basic experimental research plans and research models, efficient clinical translation applications cannot be achieved yet. This article will discuss and prospect the present situation and potential future directions of basic experimental research on musculoskeletal disorders from several aspects, including intervertebral disc degeneration, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, stem cells, and biomaterials.
