A Study of Needs and Effects of Home Modification for the Dementia Elderly
Currently, the vast majority of people living with dementia in China receive care at home, and caregivers bear a heavy physical and mental burden. The decline in abilities such as memory, judgment, and execution means that people living with dementia have special needs for their home environment.Existing research has shown that the quality of the living environment has a great impact on their convenience and safety in daily life.At present,China is carrying out large-scale home modification projects for older adults, but there are few specialized renovation proj-ects for those with dementia.Based on the home modi-fication project for families with elderlies with dementia, this study aims to evaluate their current needs for home modification and the outcomes of the modification.Based on surveys and follow-up visits to 195 families, this study analyzed the current status of the home environment, their satisfaction with different types of assistive devices, and their needs and desires for future renovation. The results show that there are many safety hazards in the home envi-ronment of people living with dementia, and the incidence of falls and wandering is higher than that of older adults without dementia.Renovation needs to be tailored to the physical and mental characteristics of people with different degrees of dementia and intelligent safety protection equip-ment should be introduced. The results can provide some reference for home modification projects for families with people living with dementia.
