In the Mist of History:the Morphological Source and Vicissitude of Xi'an Drum-Tower and the Historical City Centre
Through textual research on historical documents,this article first traces and analyzes the complete historical context of the drum-tower and the central area in Xi'an historical city since the Sui and Tang dynasties to this day.On this basis,by exploring the political axis and the religious axis with historical continuity controlled by the drum-tower and the bell-tower,the article interprets the historical urban morphology of Xi'an,and makes analogy with other historical cities of the same era.By drawing on the views and methods of Western modern social thinkers,this paper demonstrates the logical relationship between power and space,and then reveals the pow-er space shaped by the drum-tower and the bell-tower.The starting point of this research is to provide a cognitive perspective for the protection,regen-eration and revitalization of the historical built environment of Xi'an,which may also have certain reference value for other historical settlements.The ultimate goal is to call for contemporary urban construction and architectural creation to establish an internal and essential connection with the historical spatial pattern and relics of the city.
