Preserving Historical Toponymy through the Lens of Collective Memory——A Case Study of Shihudang Town,Songjiang District,Shanghai
Toponymy is integral to a city's historical memory.Preserving historical toponymy helps maintain the cultural continuity of the city and strengthens residents'sense of belonging and identity.However,many urban place names today serve merely as geographical markers and fail to convey the cultural significance of their origins.Additionally,the social and historical memories embedded in many old toponymies are gradually being erased.Cities,as human collectives,embody urban historical toponymy as a form of collective memory,perpetuated through rituals and practices.This study leverages the theory of collective memory to analyze its characteristics,revealing the patterns and features in the historical evolution of place names.It proposes a framework for the preservation of toponymy that integrates the characteristics of collective memory with the historical significance of place names.The study also explores strategies for preserving historical place names,using the toponymy plan of Shihudang in Songjiang District as a specific example.
