On the Military Force of Duwei Si under the Background of Changing Political Situation in the Late Jin Dynasty
For the purpose of rebuilding military forces directly controlled by the central administration,as well as enhancing combat effectiveness of the army,Emperor Jin Aizong established Duwei Si.This operation was an important component of the military—political reformation in the late Jin Dynasty.Along with the amounts of Duwei Si increasing,armies affiliated to Duwei Si have become the main and elite military forces of Emperor Jin Aizong,whether in quantity or quality.Duwei Si's army constituted the main strength of the garrison in vital nodes of the Yellow River—Tongguan military defense line,such as Tongguan and Kaifeng,and a similar situation also happened in another ringlike military defense line which surrounded Kaifeng from west,south and east.In several crucial wars which determined the fate of Jin Dynasty,Duwei Si's army played a vital role.Both its important influence to military activities and the ruler's special concern have shown the critical position of Duwei Si in military—political reformation as well as in the military affairs of the late Jin Dynasty.
