On the Extension of Buddhist Thoughts to Chinese Vegetation Culture
Buddhist Thoughts promoted the abundance of connotation of the mu(木)-related Chinese characters, such as ge(格),xiang(相),guo(果)and so on,which embodied an extension to the"Being World"of Chinese nation."Shang gen xia qi zhi(上根下其枝)",a representative statement from primitive Buddhism, has brought a strong impact on traditional ontology of tiandao(天道).Zhu Daosheng and Zhan Ran proposed the explanation of"wuqing youxing"(无情有性)on plants, and Zen school had many discussions on the Buddhata of bamboos and flowers. All these thoughts has increased the depth of"ganwu(感物)"of Chinese nation and inspired Neo-Confucianism in Song and Ming Dynasties. The extension to Chinese vegetation culture from Buddhist thoughts reflected a change in the understanding of lives in the process of Sinicization of Buddhism, which turned from"benji(本寂)"to"benjue(本觉)",and embodied the absorption and growth of Chinese philosophy.
