On the Multiple Meanings of"Yu"in Literary Theories of the Six Dynasties
The original meaning of"yu(腴)"refers to body fat.However,during Six Dynasties,as the consciousness of life was highly developed,"yu"has entered the field of literature and presented different emotional tendency of praise or criticism.In the Six Dynasties'literary theory,"yu"was not only used to praise the style of gorgeous rhetoric and rich quotation,but also to criticize stylistic disorder or the lack of lyricism.The using of"yu"echoed the atmosphere of that time,which was keen on sensory experience,chubby body shapes,luscious tastes,health care and the pursuit of"shenyun(神韵)".Finally,the inclusive concept of life in the Six Dynasties led"yu"to merge with other styles,and developed into a mature,perfect,harmonious,moderate rhetorical and aesthetic concept.The multiple meanings of"yu"has reflected the rich connotation of the literary theory in Six Dynasties,as well as revealed the characteristic life consciousness at that time."Yu"is a typical example of the integration of ancient life views and literary views.
