On the Formation and Evolvement of the Concept of"Jiangdong"before the Five Dynasties
The connotation evolvement of the concept of"Jiangdong(江东)"is closely related to the political and geographical situation of the past dynasties. From the Warring States Period to the Qin and Han Dynasties,"Jiangdong"had no clear scope, generally referred to the State of Wu(吴)centered on today's Suzhou.During the Three Kingdoms periods, marked by the establishment of the capital of Sunwu(孙吴),"Jiangdong"evolved from a regional name to a political geographical concept, which was used to designate many regimes and their ruling areas around Jiankang/Jianye(建康/建邺/建业).After the East Jiangnan Road(Jiangnan Dongdao;江南东道)was set up during the Jingyun(景云)periods of Tang Dynasty,"Jiangdong",as its abbreviation text, started to have a more clear spatial scope. However, after the outbreak of the Rebellion of Anshi(安史),"Jiangdong"was replaced by"Zhexi(浙西)",which was a name of a fangzhen(方镇).The concept of"Jiangdong"emerged as an equivocal regional name, changed into a name of the political power or administrative region later, then changed back to an equivocal regional name, eventually became a historical name. This evolvement has reflected the exclusive position of political power in the process of naming large regions.
