On the Narrative of Orthodoxy of the Neo-Confucianism and the Deconstruction of You Zuo's Historical Status——Also on the Epithet"the Sinner of the Cheng School"
Due to the indulgence in Buddhism in his later years,You Zuo was criticized by the later scholars of the Cheng school and was then called"the sinner of the Cheng School".Though You did indulge in Buddhism and abandoned Cheng Zi's doctrine, the story of You Zuo's debate with Zen Monk Daoning,in which he was defeated,is made-up.Furthermore,the current collection of You's writings has been edited by Zhu Xi,and the content of his interpretation of Confucianism, which was based on Buddhism, has been deleted. At that time, the dissatisfaction of Cheng's later scholars has made it difficult to form an academic environment that was conducive to the dissemination of You's writings and doctrines.Various documentary records and later evaluations have shaped the historical image of You Zuo.The entanglements of right and wrong, the interweaving of truths and falsehoods, have made it difficult to return to the historical objectivity to evaluate his academic and moral status. This issue is an excellent case for exploring the narrative and historiography of Neo-Confucianism in the intellectual history of Song Dynasty.
