On Some"Strange"Elements Observed in Sanxingdui Bronze Arts and Their Implications to Relevant Religious Concepts
Bronzes excavated from the pits of Sanxingdui are remarkably different from congener bronzes discovered in Shang civilization,as well as the Huai River and the Yangtze River valleys.With unique forms and designs,Sanxingdui bronzes excelled in expressing human figures,birds and beasts.Diverse forms of bronzes discovered in newly excavated pits,K3~K8,illustrated the using of multiple soldering techniques,such as piling,extending and welding.A few composite bronzes have been confirmed so far,though their functions were still unknown.Concerning on these bronzes,this paper offered detailed analysis on styling features,especially on how human figures were formed.It could be seen that the casters of these bronzes have adopted a certain set of artistic principles:Similar shapes and poses have been applied in human figures,birds,as well as beasts,which implied the inter-connections among them;Bronzes shared similar appearance could be presented in different sizes,which showed a breakthrough to the hierarchical restrictions of size;Various decorative components embodied sophisticated bronze-casting techniques.The detailed analysis of these principles,which suggested that the casters shared a mature and stable set of cognition about the images and shapes related to human figures,could provide some new insights to the understanding of the modes and concepts of Sanxingdui culture.
