On the Funeral Rites in the Republic of China Period from the Perspective of the Interaction between Etiquette and Custom
In the Republic of China period, the construction of Chinese society experienced a transformation from traditional hierarchy to modern democracy. As an important part of social culture, funeral rites have also changed accordingly during this period. In the early Republic of China, based on the principle of"providing convenience for people while following the ancient precepts",the Beiyang government formulated Fu Zhi(服制)and Li Zhi(礼制)as well as a Sangli Cao'an(丧礼草案;Draft of Funeral Rites). The ethics and functions of the new funeral rites have undergone profound changes, which presented as the replacement of elements and values within the interaction between etiquette and custom. However,in local societies'actual situation, new rites were not adequately accepted.Instead of the new rites,it was the original Confucian rites which integrated and interacted with the old custom. After all,the transformation from imperial ideology to the republicanism has not changed the social structure of"xiang tu(乡土)"China, but has made the value system of"rites"uncertain. With the lack of the bond of interaction between national level and the grass-root level, national etiquette failed to exert influence on local custom,as they did not share a same social structure.
