On Li Liwu's Interpretation to The Doctrine of the Mean——Also on a Comparison with Zhu Zi's Interpretation
Li Liwu inherited and developed the theory of Jianshan School, which explained The Doctrine of the Mean with The Book of Changes.Li recognized"Zhong"and"Yong"as the two main systems of The Doctrine of the Mean, then re-organized the work into five major sections and fifteen chapters with concepts of"Xing""Dao""Jiao"and"Zhongyong".He interpreted"Zhong"and"Yong"with"Qian"and"Kun",and defined their relationship as noumenon and function.Combining Qian with The Doctrine of the Mean,Li believed that"Zhong"is the core spirit of Confucian orthodoxy, while"De"and"Wei"were necessary conditions for achieving the orthodoxy.Li's interpretation were quite different from Zhu Zi's thoughts, which was more popular then and interpreted The Doctrine of the Mean with the theory of Xinxing, both of them derived from Luoxue.A review on Li's interpretation is beneficial for us to clarify the actual situation of academic development during Late Song and Early Yuan era and to recognize the diversity and openness of the Luoxue School. Moreover,Li's interpretation also had a certain influence on the interpretation of The Doctrine of the Mean during the Yuan,Ming, and Qing dynasties.
