On the Evolution of Lujin Nü Legend during Ming and Qing Dynasties
During Ming and Qing dynasties, the development of Lujin Nü(露筋女;a woman with exposed tendons)legend has been deeply influenced by ideological and cultural changes. On the one hand, under the dominance of Confucian ethics,a large number of literary works praised the moral integrity of the woman, who was reshaped into a female image of"chaste & filial".On the other hand, with the rise of Yangming Philosophy and Shixue(实学),the authenticity of the legend has been constantly questioned and deconstructed, which,on the contrary, stirred up objections among the moralists, who refuted the exploration to the authenticity of the legend with moral and ethical standards.Under a pragmatic cultural trend, the woman was elevated to a deity in the national sacrificial system during the Jiaqing period. With the completion of this politicization process, the related doubts on the legend also vanished from sight.
