Effect of phosphate on feeding preference of Reticulitermes
Objective To study the effect of 7 phosphates on feeding preference of Reticulitermes speratus. Methods The phosphates and their optimal concentration with better promoting effect on termite feeding were selected through choice feeding trials, and consumption of the phosphate samples of termite was then tested by no choice feeding trials. Results The choice feeding trials showed that all the 7 phosphates could promote feeding preference of termites to different degrees, the promoting effect was closely related to their concentration. The cellulose containing 0.12%K2HPO4,0.09%Na4P2O7,0.18%Na4P2O7 and 0.46%K2HPO4 were most effective, and the consumption was 7.83,7.64,6.33 and 5.15 times of the control, respectively. The no choice feeding trials showed that there was no significant difference between the consumption of phosphate samples and the control. Conclusion Phosphate has a significant effect on the feeding preference of termites.Although the consumption of phosphate samples did not significantly increased under no choice feeding conditions, the feeding preference of termites could be significantly improved under choice feeding conditions, especially K2HPO4 and Na4P2O7 showing the most effective.
