Pathogens and risk factors for oral and maxillofacial space infection
OBJECTIVE To investigate the pathogenic distribution characteristics and risk factors predisposing to o-ral and maxillofacial space infection(MSI).METHODS Totally 103 patients with oral and maxillofacial space in-fection admitted to the First People's Hospital of Wenling from Jan 2020 to Dec 2022 were retrospectively recrui-ted as the infected group(n=103 cases);103 patients who were hospitalized in the department of oral and maxil-lofacial surgery and did not have oral and maxillofacial space infection during the same period were included in the non-infected group(n=103 cases). The space involved, pathogenic distribution and susceptibility factors of oral and maxillofacial space infection were analyzed.RESULTS Among oral and maxillofacial space infection in 103 pa-tients,single space infection accounted for 84.47%.The main infection sites were suborbital space, masseter space, buccal space and submaxillary space.Multiple-space infection occurred in 16 cases(15.53%),mainly in masseter-pterygnathic space,suborbital-subtemporal space.A total of 112 strains of pathogenic bacteria were i-dentified,among which the gram-positive bacteria accounted for 59.82%and gram-negative bacteria accounted for 38.39%.Older age, smoking history, poor nutritional status,diabetes,rotor-induced malpractice were independ-ent risk factors for oral and maxillofacial space infection(P<0.05).CONCLUSION The patients with oral and maxillofacial space infection were mainly involved in single space. The main pathogenic bacteria were Staphylococ-cus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The risk factors included old age, smoking history, poor nutrition,diabe-tes and iatrogenic malpractice.
