How deterrence is perceived and responded to can be observed by examining the strategies an individual adopts when committing an offence and after being arrested.Based on the analysis of questionnaires collected from 62 drug offenders and in-depth interviews with 9 offenders in a women's prison in Province J,this paper finds that female drug offenders adopt different strategies to avoid detection and mitigate the punishment.Thereby,the risk of drug offending could to different degrees be under control.In doing so,they managed the risk of drug offending to varying degrees.This"insider"perspective on drug-related crime helps to reveal the decision-making mechanisms of female drug offenders and to reflect on and improve China's existing drug prevention and control systems.
