Rapid identification study of polyvinyl alcohol in sized cotton fabrics by Py-GC/MS
The pyrolysis characteristics of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)were analyzed by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry(Py-GC/MS)technique,a rapid method for the identification of low levels of PVA in sizing cotton fabrics was proposed, and the interference factors and low detection limits of the method were investigated. The results show that pyrolyzation characteristics of PVA at 400 ℃ are distinct, and the pyrolyzates include acetaldehyde,2,5-dihydrofuran,butenal,3-penta-2-ketone,2,4-hexadienal,benzaldehyde,acetophenone,methyl benzaldehyde and octa-2,4,6-trienal.Acetaldehyde,butenal,2,4-hexadienal and benzaldehyde can be extracted and identified from pyrolytic total ion current(TIC)of the PVA sized cotton fabric by using their mass spectrum characteristics;PVA can be quickly identified using these four pyrolyzates as the pyrolytic characteristics of PVA.However, these four characteristic pyrolyzates are not detected in the pyrolytic TIC of the cotton fabric, starch, polyacrylic acid size,CMC and sodium alginate, which would not interfere with the results of this method. To sum up,this method is fast, accurate and sensitive without sample pretreatment.
