To explore the possibility of combining Chinese traditional culture with translator ethics,this study presents the internal correlation between Mencius's"four sprouts"("Siduan",namely,benevolence,righteousness,etiquette and wisdom)and translator ethics.The study holds that the"four sprouts"are an interrelated whole,constituting the basic connotation of translator ethics.In other words,"benevolence"is the premise and basis,"righteousness"the appropriateness and self-discipline,"etiquette"the external restraint and"wisdom"the judgement of translator ethics.The translator ethics based on the four sprouts is an interrelated system of mutual interpretation and complement,and the four sprouts together constitute the ethical requirements for translators to implement translation behaviors.Studying translator ethics with the"four sprouts"as the explanatory framework is a kind of ideological inheritance and conceptual innovation by"returning to the origin and opening up the new",which can provide a unique analytical perspective and research ideas for the ideological construction of translator ethics.
