A study on the development of a well-being scale for rural empty-nest elderly in China
In response to the inadequacy of current tools for measuring the well-being of elderly people in China, particularly the lack of a scale specifically designed for measuring the well-being of rural empty-nest elderly, literature research, structured interviews, and expert consultations were employed. As a result,a scale for measuring the well-being of rural empty-nest elderly was developed preliminarily. The scale consists of 58 items across five dimensions:physical and mental health, family love and care, interpersonal support, social tolerance, and self-accomplishment.The scale underwent initial testing in rural areas of Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces. The items were analyzed by using SPSS26.0 and AMOS24.0 for exploratory and validation factors, respectively. Finally,a formal scale consisting of 22 items was selected. The rotation resulted in a cumulative variance explained of 62.071%,which is above the acceptable threshold of 50%.The validation factor analysis demonstrates that the scale is reliable and valid for measuring the well-being of empty-nest elderly in rural China. This study will address the shortcomings of the academic community in developing a well-being scale for empty nesters to some extent and promote the empirical research of the academic community in this field.
