Study on Effective Length Factor of Girder Bridge Pier
Effective length factor is an important parameter affecting the design of pier.The small value will cause unsafe design;conversely,will cause uneconomical design.This paper considered the influence of thrust stiffness of adjacent bridge pier and horizontal stiffness of bearings,and proposed a theoretical algorithm for calculating ef-fective length factor of pier.This paper comparatively analyzed the difference between the proposed theoretical method and the finite element model calculation by using the relationship between critical load of Euler's Formula and Pier effectine Length factor.The influence of pier height,pier diameter and span arrangement on effective length factor were also discussed.In summary,the method proposed in this study provides a basis for the calcula-tion of effective length factor and the design of the pier.
