An Investigation of the Integration of Local Culture into English Textbooks
In today's multicultural society, the integration of local culture into textbook design is especially significant given the strategy of promoting Chinese culture worldwide. This study analyzes the presentation of Chinese local cultural content in the textbook Speaking I:Cultural Bridge of the College Critical English Course series.Through interviews,it explores the perceptions of college students regarding the presentation of local culture in this textbook. The findings indicate that while each unit of the textbook involves local culture to some extent, the selection and distribution of cultural content are uneven. The interviewed students showed positive perceptions of the integration of local culture into English teaching materials, but they indicated that their ability to express local culture in English was not strong enough. They expressed a desire for improvement in the construction of English teaching materials from the perspective of cultural integration.Based on text analysis and interview results, the study makes several suggestions on how to fully and effectively present local culture in English teaching materials, including increasing local Chinese cultural elements, integrating localized language expressions, and adding writing tasks and multimedia learning resources related to local culture.
