On the Characters'Wandering and Redemption in Gurnah's The Last Gift from the Perspective of Community
The utmost important theme in Gurnah's literary works is the portrayal of those wandering people such as refugees and migrants.Among all of related writings,The Last Gift occupies a special position because it narrates a story of the whole family of Abbas,a migrant, telling the influence of migrant experience on family members, their salvation and reconciliation with each other. This is quite different from other novels by Gurnah, which mostly present individual migrants'experiences and states. The problem of migrants is essentially lying in their relationships with communities such as family, ethnic groups, and national states. In this novel,Gurnah presents these family problems and individual experiences from the perspective of community.By this way,Gurnah tries to prove that a better understanding about migrant group could be achieved only if we consider them from the perspectives of community, such as the relationship with family members and strangers.
