The Use of"We"in the Academic Texts of Chinese Academic Novices
As a self-referential pronoun,"we"is frequently employed in co-authored papers and in academic writings of academic novices. The utilization of self-referential pronouns not only facilitates identity construction, but also reflects writers'pragmatic competence.Despite its significance, the identity construction awareness of academic novices concerning the use of self-referential pronouns remains under-explored.To address this gap, this study constructs academic novices and experts'academic English discourse corpora, and conducts a comparative analysis of usage differences of"we"between these two writer groups by adopting a framework of lexical variation. Results demonstrate distinct preferences in the referential and functional meanings of"we"between academic novices and experts, with varying degrees of ambiguity and overlapping usage. These differences suggest that reader awareness and identity construction awareness may exert an influence on self-referential pronoun usage patterns.
