Retranslation is a special cultural phenomenon. This study examines the two English translations of Pai Hsien-yung's Chinese short story"The Eternal Yin Hsueh-yen".The first English version is translated by Katherine Carlitz and Anthony C.Yu,while the second one is by Pai Hsien-yung,Patia Yasin, and George Kao,which also falls into the category of collaborative self-translation.By comparing the two English versions, the study attempts to explore the features of the retranslation case and probe into the factors behind it from the perspective of collaborative self-translation.The results show that, due to factors like translator identity, translation motivations, and target readers, the retranslated version is generally closer to the original text than the first one, even with a few cases of deviation. The study can provide a fresh research perspective on retranslation and provoke further reflections on issues related to retranslation.
