On the Estrangement Effect of War Cries:Plays by Diane Glancy
Based on Bertolt Brecht's concept of Verfremdungseffekt, this paper examines the estrangement effect in War Cries:Plays by Diane Glancy, which is a collection of plays written by Diane Glancy,an American Indian playwright. It argues that by adopting a series of estranging devices such as"non-Aristotelian"structure,ceremonies,dances and soliloquys,Glancy not only exhibits unique Indian cultural elements on the stage, but also visualizes, before the audience, her American Indian characters'spiritual struggle under the oppressive domination of white internal colonialism, thus enabling the audience to examine the actual state of contemporary American Indian existing dilemma dispassionately and to ponder deeply over the complex factors that contribute to such a dilemma.
