Objective To explore the change of cognitive function in patients with varicella zoster virus(VZV)meningitis. Methods 23 patients with VZV meningitis diagnosed with cerebrospinal fluid VZV DNA positive who were hospitalized in our hospital from January 2020 to December 2022 were selected as the research subjects and 28 people who came to physical examination as the control group.Their cognitive functions were evaluated using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale(MoCA).Results 6 of the 23 patients with VZV meningitis had cognitive decline.Compared with that of the control group, the MoCA scores of VZV meningitis patients was much impaired(25.88±2.31 VS.27.61±1.81,P<0.05),visual-spatial executive function(3.29±1.12 VS.4.11±0.92)and delayed recall(4.21±0.66 VS.4.57±0.50)were significantly decreased, with statistically significant differences(P<0.05).Conclusion Patients with VZV meningitis had cognitive dysfunction in the early stages. The main cognitive abnormalities were visual-spatial executive function and delayed recall.Clinicians should pay attention to the cognitive function screening of patients with VZV meningitis.
