Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)formula-based ointment in improving skin itching in patients with uremic pruritus. Methods A total of 60 patients with maintenance hemodialysis and uremic pruritus from our hospital were selected using the "14-item uremic pruritus scale for dialysis patients" and randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, with 30 cases in each group. The observation group received basic Western medical treatment combined with a TCM formula-based ointment, while the control group received basic Western medical treatment combined with a basic ointment without TCM formula. The treatment course was 4 weeks. The changes in itching scores, total effective rate, and biochemical indicators before and after treatment in both groups were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18 software. Results Before treatment, there was no significant difference in skin itching scores between the two groups(P>0.05);after treatment, the itching scores of both groups showed significant differences(P<0.05),and the observation group had lower itching scores and higher total effective rate than the control group, with significant differences(P<0.05);there were no significant changes in biochemical indicators before and after treatment in both groups(P>0.05).Conclusion The TCM formula-based ointment can effectively improve the skin itching symptoms of patients with uremia, and its effect is better than that of the basic ointment without TCM components, making it worth promoting for clinical use.
